Ways to stay positive at work during difficult times

Stress is something everyone feels on a day-to-day basis – even more so at work. Maybe you’re just having a bad day or having troubles at home, or just none of what you’re doing seems to be correct. Inevitably, stress piles up, and it becomes difficult working in these conditions. Especially during this pandemic, where many struggles to get by, it is natural to feel down. You can’t help what you feel. And as working adults, even in the face of difficulties, your responsibilities and work take precedence.

Feeling beat down by life or unmotivated at work? It’s important to remember your goals.

So, in this day and age, staying positive is one way to push through difficulties. Thus, here are 6 ways to stay positive at work during difficult times:

  1. Live Healthily

Your well-being is important at work. Eating right and sleeping right is not something an employee should skip on. As it is, hearty meals and adequate sleep prevent illnesses and fatigue, making you more productive at work. Naturally, when you go to work on an empty stomach or with a lack of sleep, you’d feel sluggish or grumpy. As work piles up and stress looms around you constantly, you need a healthy, strong, and energetic body to help you endure and overcome a heavy workload and a heavy heart.

Of course, working out shouldn’t be overlooked. A few stretches or a short walk won’t hurt anyone. In a 2019 study at Iowa State University, psychologists even found that a 12-minute walk can be a powerful mood booster. It’s one way to clear your head and take your mind off your troubles.

2. Take a Break

Staring at a screen for too long is bad for you; not only can it strain your eyes, but it could also negatively impact your brain. So even if you say it’s for work, nothing good will come from overworking. Breathe. Shut your eyes. Clear your head. Get a snack. Talk to a colleague. Overworking your brain despite you having a difficult time would be counterproductive. Instead, regain your usual energy and positivity during breaks; that way, it would be easier to focus and dedicate yourself to work.

3. Treat Yourself

At the end of a day’s work, reward yourself for doing great at work. No matter how small the achievement that day is, give yourself something to look forward to. From indulging yourself with humble food you crave to buying a book or game you’ve been waiting for its release, these little treats can fill your heart with joy – just like how even the tiniest spark can create large fires; the littlest rewards can cause ripples of positive reactions.

4. Trust in the Process

Feeling beat down by life or unmotivated at work? It’s important to remember your goals – whether it is to provide, to survive, or to thrive, no matter the plan, as you trust your actions—as you believe that the path you’re taking will lead you somewhere, you can keep moving forward with a positive and determined outlook.

Ask yourself. Why are you working in the first place? Why are you going through this tedious process of work? These questions will remind you that although you may be going through a difficult time now at work, at some point, you’d be acknowledged for your work and feel a sense of fulfillment.

5. Set Little Reminders

What is a better way there to lift one’s mood and be positive? It’d be motivation. Besides your goals, find a reason for inspiration and then materialize it, let it take shape.  By simply having these items placed on your desk or near your vicinity, these little reminders can evoke happy thoughts and memories as you work. Then, as you glance their way, the fatigue and the weight of burden on your shoulders could ease up and lift your mood.

6. Know Your Mental State

Where you are mentally and emotionally can significantly affect your performance at work. For example, it would be hard to stay positive when you feel constant anxiety and signs of depression. Usually, many adults bottle up their feelings, which increases stress and burns them out. Thus, you should know how to handle your feelings and let them out in a healthy way. One of the most common ways to do this is to keep a journal – write down how you feel, keep track of your mental health and your moods, vent, and let it all out.

Linking ourselves to a good environment and an optimistic outlook in life are the best things to look after. Especially in the pandemic, taking care of our well-being physically and having the courage to come out and face our mental stability are the two things we should consider having it balanced; in conclusion, being healthy.

At the end of a day’s work, reward yourself for doing great at work. No matter how small the achievement that day is, give yourself something to look forward to.
